Architecture as an Independent Variable

The idea that we can separate application content from architectural form, or style, is a mainstay of modern software engineering. Architectural styles have themselves been a subject of intensive study. The problem is that we do not yet have an adequate account of the mappings that combine choices of application description independent of style, and of architectural style independent of applica...

Redox Regulation of Heart Regeneration: An Evolutionary Tradeoff

Heart failure is a costly and deadly disease, affecting over 23 million patients worldwide, half of which die within 5 years of diagnosis. The pathophysiological basis of heart failure is the inability of the adult heart to regenerate lost or damaged myocardium. Although limited myocyte turnover does occur in the adult heart, it is insufficient for restoration of contractile function (Nadal-Gin...

Robustness as an evolutionary principle.

We suggest simulating evolution of complex organisms using a model constrained solely by the requirement of robustness in its expression patterns. This scenario is illustrated by evolving discrete logical networks with epigenetic properties. Evidence for dynamical features in the evolved networks is found that can be related to biological observables.

Language as an evolutionary system

John Maynard Smith and Eörs Szathmáry argued that human language signified the eighth major transition in evolution: human language marked a new form of information transmission from one generation to another [Maynard Smith J, Szathmáry E. The major transitions in evolution. Oxford: Oxford Univ. Press; 1995]. According to this view language codes cultural information and as such forms the basis...
